single act if courage is often the tipping point for something extraordinary about to happen
the plaza in egypt- defiance growing into a rebellion that toppled a regime from the 70s
all around the world we began tire...
finding extraordinary moments in your story your world... tipping point for things God wants to do in your life,,,
don't look back and wonder and say.. if only i had it...
do let the gap get to large.. you will face red seas, goliaths, moments of terror.. whether or not you...
"defining moments of your life" when you look back on the extraordinary work of God in your life there will be fear involved there will courage involved... part of the balance was my willingness and ability to step out and overcome the managing of risk
when i think about the real world we live in..
our 3 challenges
hoping that God is already poking you in the ribs and you are wrestling... today could be the tipping point for doing the thing you were supposed to do... we teach the courage of daniel and the morality of joseph but here in your little world you are scared
3 FACES OF COURAGE
1. THE COURAGE TO STAY- when it would be easier to go... Charles Stanley's story (over 40 years)... started as an associate pastor @ FBC Atlanta... church did we'll and the powers that be made it difficult.. coming home heavy hearted and dejectede.. "everything around me says go..." even my friends say go... "when i pray God is whispering stay..."
everything would say go.. the treatment, the friendships, the powers that be... except when he would kneel
we hardly ever get to know the final chapters (the success of Charles Stanley)
"WE never know what hangs in the balance when God whispers stay when everything around you says go"
"we had a 1000 in sunday school... and I hate you"
"if ministryt is hard then it just means you are in ministry.. ministry is supposed to be hard"
look out at YOUR people and God says it's not time to go...
if that is your situation then that is your goliath, your red sea, your pharaoh,
DO I HAVE THE COURAGE TO STAY
your decision to stay may be the tipping for something extraordianry- for those that are watching you...
2.THE COURAGE TO LEAVE- when everything around you tells you to stay
Andy Stanley's story- starting the satteliate campus for FBC Atlanta- brochures for other churches in our parking lot.. 2 churches developed and 2 different groups of leadership, and then there came this unsettling feeling... we should leave.. "but we have led and built..." over time you just start to know the voice.. more audible than audible.. "how can leaving a church be of God?" read tale of 3 kings
"beginning empty-handed and alone, frightens the best of man speaks volumes of just how sure they are that God is with them"
Told my dad I had to go.. we hugged and cried... he had been so good to me and that I was being ungrateful..
Sometimes God says Go when it would be easier to stay... "What if we hadn't left..." He wants you out of your current ministry situation and somewhere else.. that's your Goliath, that's your Pharaoh
it is a matter of fear and a matter of courage
3. THE COURAGE TO ASK FOR HELP- when it would be easier to pretend that everything is okay.
isn't it true that more people are in need of this than anything
"I am going to commit my way through, I am going to pray my way through, I am going to spiritual my way out of this...
"SECRETS IN THE LIFE OF A LEADER ARE EXTRAORDINARILY DANGEROUS"
YOU ARE AFRAID
1- of what other people what find out about you
2- of what you will find out about yourself
you are never going to write about it and your are never going to want to tell it
"I don't know of a high-profile Christian leader that is not in counseling" we are all a mess... when you are a the point end of a spear, you catch more resistance than everyone else... we wear out faster than everyone else
our marriages take hits quicker, faster, and deeper than anyone else
most people think that they could your job with one hand tied behind your back... "we do our hardest work on stage in front friends, family, enemies... and they all have our email"
we need more help and sooner help than the average people but we are the least open to ask for help...
you know what hangs in the balance... "you don't know, you don't realize it"
"I am not judgmental, I am biblical"
"If you want to finish well, step up, be courageous, and ask for help when it would be easier to pretend that everything is okay"
WHAT WE SHOULD FEAR-
we should fear waking up one day and not knowing if we are in the center of God's will for our lives, especially as leaders- the fear of the Lord is beginning of..
Fear of the Lord is the OMG I might say no.. that I might try to do it myself
When it's too clear we do mental gymnastics to make it unclear because it is easier to hide in tension..
How do I hear from God
When you have clarity.. when I try to create a lack of clarity... I ask myself what story do you want to tell?
B/c everything is a story and when we look back this is how it will be known...
Do you want to tell the story that ends in brokenness, weakness, or fear? or that begins in brokenness, weakness, or fear and ends in a much brighter place
You trust God with outcomes.. obeying God doesn't mean we create or manipulate outcomes...
Tipping point for all of us is some point in our lives...
If God would whisper the final result we would always obey but thats why we sing, teach, and often pray.. we walk by FAITH and not by SIGHT

so for those that didn't know, now you can know...
This Fall I will begin a season of study at Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina. It has been a long term dream to further my education, particularly at Duke. The faculty, environment, and reputation are impeccable and it stands as a truly enriching place for theological education and dialogue. However, this all means that I must resign my post here at First Baptist Church of Bethany and prepare for the transition eastward. My hope is to post regularly here with updates about Karen and I's new adventure and relocation to a place unfamiliar.zw

As we move quickly from March to April the weight of each passing Friday looms a little heavier on the way to Holy Week... That a little more will be required of us...
